My Videos

As my MA focused on aspects of motor racing it’s obvious that my video work is going to have a strong link. These small films are not what you would normally see on the TV. They are very much from my point of view and I hope you enjoy the alternative angle. Since last October I have been working on a project for Meckow International. This involved making videos to promote a water purification unit in Malawi. I am in the process of uploading so there will be more daily.

Location Oulton Park & Croft Racing Circuits

Camera Sony Handycam HDR-HC7

Duration 8 mins 55 secs

I always try to ride my push bike around the circuits. The evening is a time and environment of calm. The birds sing and I find the landscape beautiful, peaceful, a sharp contrast of what is to follow. You are able to see the circuit in a very different way and understand more about it. Mine is a study using sound and vision, to explore my experiences and emotions.

The bike footage was filmed at Oulton Park in 2007 as part of my Masters project. It is a little bumpy as I was filming with a hand held camera and riding one handed. I was not to know that the next day Stephen my son would lead the race and I would be allowed to use the footage from his in car-camera. Extra shots were taken at Croft as I only had the chance to do one circuit at Oulton Park.

This video sums up a great deal of my racing experience.

Moto Perpetuo

Location Pembray Racing Circuit (South Wales)
Camera Canon SD MVX460
Duration 4.3 minutes

As I sat by the racing circuit watching my son driving on a test day I became aware of the following in no particular order. The sun was shining, I could hear a bumble bee, a racing car and a skylark all at the same time. I could hear the racing car driving a complete circuit, alone. It would zoom past me and fade into the sounds of nature. Then come back again, over and over. Everyone else working feverishly to make the car complete the lap in a faster and faster time. They were so totally focused on their goal. It made no difference to the skylark and the bumble bee.

Grass was slowly reclaiming the old tyres lining the track. Wildflowers and buttercups sticking out of the gaps. The grass was slowly moving in the breese. My vantage point gave me a composition of horizontals, tyres, grass, track and every so often the racing car. I liked the juxtaposition of wildness and natural beauty with the extreme high spec technicality of the racing cars. The juxtapositions made me think about finality, the circularity of life, time and humanities race
against it.

Location Snetterton Racing Circuit (England)

Camera MacBook Laptop

Duration 10 min

Filmed before and during a British International Formula 3 race in 2007. I balanced my laptop on the roof of our motor home and tried to forget about it as I watched my son compete. It was windy but with bright sunshine the light was excellent.

I was shocked at the extent of my anxiety shown in the footage. It has been difficult to edit and uncomfortable to watch. However it has helped me overcome and control my fears a little as I realised my fear though not irrational, was fruitless and futile.

I believe it is a parents basic instinct to nurture their children. To be placed in a position of no control when they are competing in potentially life threatening conditions in front of crowds of thousands had been extremely difficult for me. Especially when everyone else is enjoying the event. I have to say I am much less nervous now he races a car with a roof and windscreen wipers!

Rob Wilson is a world renown racing driver coach. Last year he coached 6 current F1 drivers, the World Rally Champion and my son Stephen. In this interview I hoped to learn more about the drivers reactions to surface and circumstance. My hope was by learning I would be less anxious whilst watching Stephen race - it did help a bit. Although I have to say a trip round Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome with Rob was a bit like a ride at Disney - you know your in safe hands but it’s still scary!
